Wear Your Fandom

I have been following HerUniverse, GoldBubbleClothing, and FanAlley  on social media and I felt very envious of how much of their merchandise catered to geekgirls and fangirls.

Because of the ridiculously low number of Voltron merch for fangirls, since my last blog post I have been busy finding ways to use my creativity in order to express and show off my Voltron geekgirl / fangirl mode.

First, I had all my Voltron tees altered with shorter sleeves & tapered sides.  This was one of the tees I have had altered:

Next, I bought a vintage bedsheet on etsy and had a seamstress turn it into a summer dress.

Finally, since I’m from Melbourne, Australia, I approached two Aussie custom crafters / upcyclers.

First was GlamComix, who used comic book covers and pages, repurposing them into useful fangirl items. Since we love #KeithandAllura, @Deensey hunted down old Voltron books and used pages from both Voltron DDP and Dynamite comics.

Then, there’s @dspdavey from Two Cheeky Monkeys Jewellery. As a upcycler, crafter and jeweller, she has literature jewellery (lockets, pendants etc) on her etsy and madeit stores.
Using our commissioned artworks by Elmer Damaso, artist of the Voltron Robotech crossover comics, we now have these new gorgeous creations below:

Also, she featured the custom Voltron items on her blog.

And recently, for the first time ever, there is now a Voltron ladies t-shirt over at the official Voltron estore. They also have a new Blazing Sword pendant by Han Cholo, which IHMO would go well with the ladies tee.

But because our blog is mainly about the beloved canon couple, like Voltron, we’ve combined both pendant and locket to form one gorgeous fanship necklace.

Perhaps one day, when DreamWorks Animation comes up with either a new Voltron series or the much-awaited Voltron movie,  Voltron will eventually have that ‘mega-fandom’ status with devoted fans and followers to rival fandoms like Harry Potter and Star Wars, and there would be more merchandise for Voltron fangirls.

For now, we want to show the world that there are devoted fangirls and shippers, who love our favourite giant robot, who would not only write FanFiction, or draw fanart, or cosplay Voltron and its characters, we want to wear our fandom for the world to see.

Fandom’s Fastest FanFiction Writer

updated on March 20, 2015 (Australian EST)

Writing Voltron FanFiction doesn’t just fall under the sci-fi genre, where Voltron comics are normally classified. When writing about the canon pairing of #KeithandAllura, it’s usually Sci-Fi Romance or SFR.  But then again, the Voltron universe includes magic, and an Arusian princess’s ability to speak to her dead family, so we can also add fantasy and the paranormal into the mix.   In the Voltron comic miniseries “A Legend Forged”, the Voltron Force even went back in time, with sorcery involved.  That comic series in itself covered sci-fi, time travel, fantasy, the paranormal and historical royalty

Similarly, Voltron FanFiction writer Paulina Ann has written stories so different and diverse, some of which include inter-dimensional travel, time travel and historical romance. Since writing her first KA pairing fanfiction in January 2014, Paulina Ann has written 38 stories in the space of a year, cementing herself as the Voltron KA fandom’s fastest FanFiction writer. For this month’s blog post, we celebrate not only the blog’s 2nd year anniversary, but also Paulina Ann’s birthday month.  For each of March’s thirty-one days, we will share Paulina Ann’s best FanFiction stories. To Paulina Ann, Happy Birthday and thank you for feeding us insatiable KA fans with (almost) daily uploads of fresh FanFiction stories and chapters with Keith and Allura pairing! *cheers*

Gingerbread Voltron

For this month’s blog post, let’s all welcome Voltron  #KeithandAllura fan, Josette Melanson from Canada, sharing her amazing story about Gingerbread (GB) Voltron.

GB Voltron and JM

xoxoxo

Right before Christmas, I stumbled upon a photo on Facebook and YouTube clip on how to make a gingerbread Voltron.  This blazing, edible artwork was made by cake artist Gonzuela Bastarache.

Ms Bastarache, whose confectionery creations were regularly featured in Cake Master magazine, was recently on Food Network’s Sugar Dome’s Halloween Wars, where she was member of a competing team called ‘Sweet Nightmares

What surprised me about the talented and popular cake artist Ms Bastarache was that she also lives in my city of Moncton, New Brunswick.  Located in east coast, Atlantic side of Canada, Moncton, known asCanada’s polite and honest city, is a small city with a population of 146,000.

After the Christmas holidays, back at work, my dear friend and fellow Voltron fan Stephen, (who shared the Voltron prize Memorabilia)  told me about GB Voltron.

He mentioned that, like most edible, freshly-made baked goods having short shelf lives, a close friend rescued a very special gingerbread confection from being tossed out, and had it delivered it to his house.

Stephen generously offered to share the gingerbread robot creation.

It was love at first bite…er…sight. We were in complete awe! I mean, how could two people in little old Moncton be in possession to what we thought was the greatest piece of edible art?

GB Voltron YummyEven though I am pictured taking a huge bite of the mighty robot, I honestly could not bring myself to eat it. This is Voltron after all! Since neither of us had any room in our freezer to store the two foot gingerbread man without it falling apart, we resolved ourselves to the unevitable. But before discarding the now stale cookie, my friend gave me the head of my beloved Blue Lion as a keepsake. Best gift ever!

Happy 30th Anniversary #Voltron!

blogpost updated on September 11, 2014 (Australian EST)

From Days of Long Ago…

From Uncharted Regions Of The Universe…

(That started from WEP‘s office in St. Louis, Missouri USA)

Comes a Legend…

The Legend of VOLTRON !

And here we are, thirty years later,  September 10, 2014, we continue to cheer, swoon, tweet,  blog, write fanfiction and fangirl Voltron.

To celebrate #Voltron30, #KeithandAllura fans have dedicated their works months before the anniversary.  A big shoutout to Mertz (our most prolific KA fanfiction writer) and Paulina Ann (our fastest KA fanfiction writer) who dedicated their fanfics “Happily Ever After: Sodalis Vitae”  and “Part of Your World” respectively.  And a special mention to  Arus, for her special blogpost.

On behalf of fans who couldn’t make it to the 30th Anniversary’s Google hangout / event,  who are not on any social media platform, who continue to express their love for Voltron in their own way, we would like to say a big THANK YOU to World Events Productions (WEP) for Voltron!

Sending you virtual cake slice for this special day

Because #Fanfiction

With Voltron’s 30th Anniversary, fanfiction writers are rekindling their love for their beloved giant robot, and this is the best time to be a Voltron fan!

One way to revisit the 80’s cartoon favourite is by writing fanfiction.

Yes, ONE WORD: #Fanfiction and it comes with a hashtag too.

Because fanfiction is taking over the world.   Don’t believe me?

This is proof.  “FIC : Why Fanfiction Is Taking Over the World”  by Anne Jamison.

FIC BOOK COVER

Anyone who is in a fandom should read this.  Especially newbies (like myself).  Yes, I still consider myself a newbie compared to the #KeithandAllura fangirls and shippers who have been members of the KAEX Yahoogroup that has been in existence since 1998, long before there was FanFiction.net  or Archive of our Own.

As a late-bloomer in fangirling,  (I became a fangirl two years ago) I couldn’t understand why there was so much wank or flame (And what’s with these fannish terminologies? Was there a whole set of jargon for those who actively joined a fandom and write fanfiction?)  I was shocked and astounded by the level of vitriol among fans during my first year as an active fangirl:  Fangirls of the same fandom angry at other fangirls of different ships / pairings;  seasoned fans pulling rank over new arrivals.  Considering Voltron is not a mega-fandom compared to Stars Wars, Harry Potter or Star Trek to name a few (and Voltron wasn’t even mentioned in the book either), I wanted to find out if this behaviour is similar across all fandoms.   Though Anne Jamison took a literary path and not the behavioural nor sociological aspects of fan studies, several anecdotes and contributors gave glimpses into how a story such as fanfiction could transform within a community.

Yes, Enlightenment came in a form of a book.   I had both the e-book version as well as the printed version.  Lots of underlines, highlights and sidenotes later,  I found my calm and often referred to FIC for guidance.  I’ll even be so bold to say,  as an active fangirl, writing fanfiction, FIC is my bible (and adding ‘IMHO’ to stop your furtive whispers by calling it one).

So, in the face of wank or flame,  my standard reply nowadays, “Your Kink Is OK, It’s Just Not My Kink”  and I would (virtually) throw them a FIC book,  “Go read Anne Jamison’s book.”   Then, taking a couple of steps back, exhale and shake off their negative energy and walk away (far away) from their nerdrage and fanfury.

AcidFree Gallery Loves VOLTRON

With exactly one month to go until Voltron’s 30th Anniversary (And we use the hashtag #Voltron30), we will be posting and sharing more jaw-dropping Voltron news and updates.

We begin the countdown with AcidFree Gallery.

AcidFreeGalleryIllustrationArtbyJamesWhite

Smitten with ALL LEVELS OF AWESOME.

AcidFree Gallery’s  latest Voltron Illustration art by James White is totally amazing, I have never gone gaga over a art print before. Never.  Until this.

Brilliant colours,  impressive artwork and most especially the first ever #KeithandAllura – friendly art print I have seen to date IMHO.

And listening to Let’s Voltron Podcast #24 : Interview with AcidFree Gallery’s Chris Wofford left me giddy with excitement,  I just had to blog about this awesome artwork.

Chris Wofford even added a comp / contest “SHOW US YOUR VOLTRON”  (deets in the podcast show notes),  My mind is totally blown.

So, if you’ve never had a Voltron art print in your life,  now is the time to get this awesome piece of Voltron Illustration Art by James White.

Now is the best time to be a Voltron fan.

What are you waiting for? Let’s Voltron!!
